Billion Dollar Pledge – Why?

A billion dollars in aid to Pakistan over two years. That is a huge donation from Japan to try and assist the stabilisation of the Pakistani economy and to aid the fight against terrorism. It is also a large portion – in fact a quarter – of the total package pledged by about 40 countries and international organisations over the same period. It seems like something out of a Dickens novel – kids living in the sewers. How could it happen in modern day Europe? Yet it was reported that Italian police found 24 Afghan children in the sewer system under a Rome railway station. The children, range in age from 10 to 15, and were unaccompanied. They slept under cartons or dirty blankets in the hiding place not far from Rome’s Colosseum.
