Australia’s Role in Afghanistan
What are Australian troops doing in Afghanistan? Australian troops have been in Afghanistan for eight years now. Australia is part of a security alliance that provides support to the United States in their endeavours to control instability and insurgency in this region.
Currently the United States is considering new policy options including sending more troops to the reigon.
What are the issues? Why is it so important that Australian troops are based in Afghanistan? What are the consequences of troop removal from this region? What types of geopolitics are at play? How much say should domestic opinion have in the decisions to send troops to Afghanistan? Is it in Australias national security that we send our troops?
